Erosion within your yard can occur from wind, excessive water runoff from improper irrigation, and storms passing through your yard, and it may not seem like a problem until you notice topsoil being stripped from your yard from the erosion. When you live in an area where erosion is a daily occurrence, it is definitely something you want to control with the right types of prevention and care. Here are some tips to help you keep the soil in your yard with erosion control practices:

Cover Bare Soil

Any areas of your yard that are void of vegetation should be covered with vegetation or other ground covering to prevent soil erosion. A great way to stop erosion in its tracks is to install a lawn with hydroseed application. The hydroseed mixture covers the soil and dries to a hard shell. Then, as you water the mixture, the seeds will germinate and grow a thick lawn. During the germination process, regular watering of the area will not wash the mixture away and will keep the soil in place while growth occurs.

You can also invest in a mulch covering, such as wood chips or bark, or a recycled rubber eco-friendly ground covering. This protects the soil from any type of erosion and makes the landscaping look attractive. Wood and bark mulch will also slowly decompose and add nutrients back into the soil to keep the soil healthy. Then, when you are ready to add plants to the area, you simply move aside some of the mulch covering and plant your vegetation.

Install Proper Irrigation

The areas in your yard that you use for planting a garden can't be fully covered with lawn or a similar ground cover, and are therefore at risk of continual erosion. This includes the soil between your vegetable plants, which is not an ideal place to plant any ground cover vegetation. If you install and use aerial sprinklers to irrigate your garden plants, the excess moisture that falls on and saturates the soil between your plants can wash away the soil.

Install a drip irrigation system to deliver water to the base of each plant and prevent excess water from causing moisture erosion. You also will benefit from not losing water spray to the wind, which might happen if you were to use aerial sprinklers. Contact a local landscaping company to install an efficient watering system for your garden plants. Then, you can control the watering with a programmable timer to keep your plants growing healthy.
